What originally brought you into the NFT space?

I was initially brought into the space via Top Shot! I’m a big Miami Heat fan, and that project was totally different than anything I had ever been exposed to. Sure enough, it became an onramp into some of the most empowering technologies I had ever discovered.

What month and year did you get involved in NFTs?

January 2021.

How did you come up with the idea for your NFT project?

Allow me to provide context on what’s going on in the world today. As it stands, the terms of services of almost every major platform states that “a username is nothing more than a string of text.” These platforms remove themselves from any liability or protection over someone’s username.

This is an important statement to consider given that individuals like The Rock, Dr. Disrespect, and Beyoncé have their brand recognized simply by name. Many of today’s services like Twitter can easily take usernames away from these parties as they see fit.

Your username is brand recognition, and more importantly, your digital identity.

At its core, Nametag is all about provable username ownership. We take those same “strings of text” and store them as ERC721 tokens; which means you can buy, sell, trade, transfer and officially own a username.

What makes your NFT project unique?

Rather than simply offering a username, we’re building a free decentralized service that breathes life into a 25 year old username infrastructure. When a holder owns their nametag, they’re able to build their social profile across the internet.

+
How big is the team and what are their roles?

Our core team consists of 4 members: Victor is our CEO, RC is our Head of Marketing, Dopamine is our CTO, and I am the Head of Community.

Are there any mechanics or utility we should know about?

Nametag is able to provide numerous use cases with the utilization of our service. The main “tech-demo” as of today is our free chrome extension which can be found in our discord. This extension is an opt in layer 2 that works on top of Twitter. It includes the ability to showcase your NFTs with your very own NFT tab. Additionally, we provide social badges that showcase the different communities you are part of from our partner projects. Finally, we’ve built an authentication feature where the user’s selected PFP is shown as verified.

The integral components of Nametag include a customizable social profile that has multi-wallet support, cross-chain functionality (ETH & SOL, more coming soon), and a page for all your links (calendars, stores, content, etc). An example of what a customizable page looks like can be found here: https://nametag.org/u/0xQuez/

Lastly, quality-of-life features include a directory which allows you to search for individuals by their username, or via the communities they are part of, as well as a native marketplace directly on Nametag’s website.

Where do you see NFTs in the next 3-5 years?

I see them everywhere. I believe NFTs will continue to develop as more innovation is brewed within the space. I see them being used for documentation, ticketing, credentials, real-estate, as well as many of the existing use cases we already have today surrounding gaming & asset ownership.

+
What would you tell a newbie before beginning to invest in the NFT market? What should they look for?

I would tell that person to be enthusiastically curious and incredibly patient. The NFT space has been treated like a gold rush over the last year, and many individuals who enter now are in search of “the next 100x.” I’d argue that this mentality will only bring damage to one’s mental and financial health. New folks are better off discovering projects that enable them to do things they were unable to do prior to the advent of NFTs. Look for interesting use-cases, or for projects that are making an impact on the lives of people outside of the NFT space. Boring answer, I know, but those are the kind of projects worth looking for.

Is there another NFT project you admire that we should reach out to next?

Veefriends, Treeverse, Dead Avatar Project, or Dr. Disrespect’s Midnight Society.

Anything else you’d like the people to know about you?!

I challenge all your readers to do these 3 things, as I believe they’re things that will make the world a better place.

1) Be curious. Wonder why the world is the way it is. Ask questions, and use those questions as a way to figure out how to improve what exists today.

2) Be consistent. Show up for yourself. No one is going to come save you. If you want to make something happen, you have to be willing to show up on the good and the bad days.

3) Act with conviction. This life is so short. You owe it to yourself to do the things that you think are important. If there’s something you really care about, something that you’re passionate about, by God, act on it. That is the gift of life.
